James Earl Carter Jr Also know as Jimmy Carter (born October 1, 1924) is a retired American politician who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party , he served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. He was educated in the public school of Plains, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant.
